About Disease

Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP), which is often abbreviated M. paratuberculosis or M. avium ssp. paratuberculosis. MAPinfection, also known as Johne’s disease, costs dairy producers up to $245 per animal per year. This chronic enteritis is present in over 68% of U.S. dairy herds, causing decreased milk production, diminished fertility, and a shortened production life. During the active stage of infection and prior to onset of clinical disease, animals generally develop antibodies to M. paratuberculosis antigens.
