Metabolic Biomarkers
Metabolic biomarkers provide valuable information about an animal’s nutritional and metabolic status. In dairy cattle, changes in energy balance during late gestation and early lactation can affect metabolic health and increase the importance of monitoring key biological markers. β-Hydroxybutyrate (BHBA)
β-Hydroxybutyrate, also known as BHBA or BHB, is a ketone body produced mainly by the liver from fatty acids when glucose supply is limited. In cattle, persistently elevated BHBA levels may be associated with subclinical or clinical ketosis. Measurement of BHBA in bovine serum can support metabolic status evaluation and transition cow monitoring.
Non-Esterified Fatty Acids (NEFA)
Non-esterified fatty acids, or NEFA, increase when dairy cows mobilize body fat, especially during late gestation and early lactation. Elevated NEFA levels during the last 2–3 weeks before calving may be associated with increased risk of postpartum metabolic and health challenges. Measurement of NEFA in bovine serum can support nutritional status evaluation and early identification of animals at risk.
