About Disease
Brucellosis occurs worldwide and affects both humans and animals. The disease is caused by bacteria of the genus Brucella (Gram-negative cocco-bacilli). The main reservoir for B. abortus is cattle; the main reservoir for B. melitensis is sheep and goat; the main reservoir for B. ovis is sheep, and the main reservoir for B. suis is pig.
Brucella function as facultative intracellular parasites, causing chronic disease, which usually persists for life. B. abortus is a blood borne pathogen that causes premature abortion of a cattle fetus. Ovine brucellosis, caused by B.Melitensis and B. ovis, is an economically important cause of abortion in sheep. B. suis typically causes chronic inflammatory lesions in the reproductive organs of susceptible animals or orchitis, and may even affect joints and other organs. The most common symptom infected with B. suis is abortion in pregnant susceptible sows at any stage of gestation. Both B. abortus and B. Melitensis are also important human pathogens. In humans, brucellosis is a serious, debilitating and sometimes chronic disease that can affect a variety of organs. Most cases are the result of occupational exposure to infected animals, but infections can also occur from ingesting contaminated dairy products.
