About Disease
Classical Swine Fever or Hog Cholera (also sometimes called Pig Plague) is a highly contagious, economically devastating disease. Reproductive problems, such as premature births, late-term abortions, and increased stillbirths, lead to increased piglet mortality and reduced growth; respiratory disease sickens pigs and makes them vulnerable to secondary infection. The infectious agent responsible is a virus CSFV (previously called hog cholera virus) of the genus Pestivirus in the family Flaviviridae. CSFV is closely related to the ruminant pestiviruses that cause Bovine Viral Diarrhea and Border Disease. An assessment of immune status, as well as serologic identification of CSFV, requires a measurement of antibodies to CSFV in serum.
