About Disease
S. Typhimurium is a pathogenic Gram-negative bacteria predominately found in the intestinal lumen. Its toxicity is due to an outer membrane consisting largely of lipopolysaccharides (LPS) which protect the bacteria from the environment. Poultry is a carrier of S. Typhimurium infection. Egg-associated salmonellosis is an important public health problem in the United States and other countries, which is mainly caused by S. Typhimurium.
