About Disease
Chlamydia abortus (formerly named Chlamydophila abortus or C. psittaci serotype 1) is an economically important pathogen of livestock, causing abortion and the premature birth of stillborn or weak offspring, with economic implications for the farming industry. While the pathogen is endemic in small ruminants worldwide, it can also cause infection in cattle, pigs, deer and horses, amongst other host species. C. abortus is zoonotic and can cause spontaneous abortion in pregnant women, as well as being potentially fatal for the pregnant mother. Disease caused by C. abortus is variously referred to as ovine enzootic abortion (OEA), enzootic abortion of ewes (EAE) or ovine chlamydiosis.
