BioStone Animal Health Launches Rabies Antibody Test Kit

DALLAS-FORT WORTH, TX— February 16, 2024 — BioStone Animal Health is pleased to announce that the launch of the AsurDxTM Rabies Antibody Test Kit designed for the detection of antibodies specific to rabies virus in mammalian serum samples. The rabies virus is a member of the order Mononegavirales, viruses with a nonsegmented, negative-stranded RNA genomes. Within this group, viruses with a distinct “bullet” shape are classified in the Rhabdoviridae family, which includes at least three genera of animal viruses, Lyssavirus, Ephemerovirus, and Vesiculovirus.

The virus is spread through the bite of infected animals, then spreads through the central nervous system. It causes brain inflammation, leading to coma and eventually death. The rabies virus can infect any mammal, but is most commonly found in wild animals such as bats, foxes, skunks, and stray dogs and cats. Spread of the virus can be attenuated by immunization of vulnerable animals. For dogs and cats an initial vaccine is recommended at 3 months of age, with boosters given every 3 years. The standard for immune activity is 0.5 international units (UL) per ml.

The AsurDxTM Rabies Antibody Test Kit detects antibodies against rabies in mammalian serum samples. The AsurDxTM Rabies Antibody Test Kit provides a simple, rapid, sensitive, and cost-effective enzyme-based immunoassay (ELISA) screening method.
