About Disease
Chicken anemia virus (CAV), a single-stranded, circular DNA virus, is the only member of the Gyrovirus genus of the Circoviridae family. Chicken anaemia virus (CAV) infection is an acute viral infection of chickens that is found worldwide. CAV can infect chickens of all ages but disease is only seen in young chickens and is characterized by depression, anemia, inappetence, hemorrhage and a sudden rise in mortality. CAV depresses the immune system and therefore leaves affected birds more susceptible to other infections and mortality can often be a result of secondary infections. An assessment of immune status, as well as serologic identification of CAV, requires a measurement of antibody to CAV in serum.
